Outline   As well as the traditional bamboo dolls made from long-jointed bamboo, mousou bamboo, and so on, many masterpieces of bamboo dolls or bamboo-made artifacts that use No, Kyogen, or Kabuki as their base are displayed. The facility includes a workshop where visitors can not only see the delicate work of local craftsmen but also experience bamboo work and doll making. There is also a Bamboo doll museum and museum shop.

Outline   Echizen wares are one of the six oldest styles of pottery in Japan. The Echizen Pottery Village is located in the center of Echizen Town and attracts many guests with the Fukui Ceramic Museum, where people can learn the history of ceramics and try making them themselves. A show shop and a gallery are also included.

Echizen Soba Center Outline  Fukui’s most famous noodle dish is Oroshi-Soba (buckwheat noodles with grated Japanese radish). In Fukui, people enjoy soba with a bland sauce and grated Japanese radish, but this custom is rare in Japan. Visitors can enjoy freshly made soba as soon as they've made the noodles. The staff kindly teaches how to knead, roll and cut the dough.

They are generically known as "Goka Area," and are famous as a Japanese paper village. Washinosato Japanese Paper Village Outline  The Washi no Sato Japanese Paper Village exhibits many historical references, paper-making tools, and ingredients. They tell the long history of Japanese papermaking as well as the papermaking method. It also exhibits the Imadate Heisei Large-sized Paper, which is the world’s largest paper and is made at the request of Taikan Yokoyama, one of the most famous Japanese-style painters.

Papyrus Museum Outline  Washi no Sato Village, home region of the best handmade Washi paper producer, offers a tour and experience. You can start from studying the 1500-year-old history of paper making technique through the historic documents exhibited at Washi no Sato Kaikan Hall and then tour around in Udatsu Craft Centre where you can see the special skills of the traditional craftsmen. Finally, why don’t you try to create your own coloured paper, ‘Irogami’, which would be the only one of its kind in the world at the Papyrus Museum.

Udatsuno Craft Museum Outline  The Udatsuno Craft Museum is one of the popular sightseeing spots in Imadate. This museum attracts visitors with its unique atmosphere as a Japanese papermakers’ village. It also has an unusual architectural style known as the Udatsu style roof. Visitors can observe craftsmen demonstrating Japanese papermaking with traditional instruments. Even today, craftsmen make Japanese papers with icy cold water, since it is said that good Japanese paper cannot be manufactured without such water. While observing craftsmen’s work, visitors may feel the tension and tenderness they show toward their work.

Daianzenji Temple

Daianzenji Temple Outline  Daianzenji Temple was established in 1658 by Mitsumichi Matsudaira, the 4th lord of the Fukui domain. It was built for the Zen-master Daigu, who is one of the high priests at the time. The temple belongs to the Myoshinji branch of the Rinzai School of Zen Buddhism and also known as the Fukui domain’s family temple. It is said that the temple has kept its appearance unchanged since it was built. The temple’s rear gate wears the crests of hollyhock, the Tokugawa family’s crest. The temple preserves several hundreds of valuable artifacts and has cemetery grounds called Senjojiki (cemetery with a thousand slabs), which is filled with 1,360 slabs of green tuff. Each slab is larger than 3m and enshrines the graves of the Matsudaira family. On the west side of the premise, there is an iris garden and flowers bloom beautifully in early summer. Visitors can sign up for Zazen (zen meditation) sessions if desired.
