Fukui: A Leading Global Producer of Eyeglasses!

Focused in Fukui and Sabae City, the region produces about 95% of domestic frames. In 1983, it successfully developed the world's first titanium (a strong, lightweight, and corrosion-resistant metal) frames, making it one of the world's three major hubs alongside Italy and China. Sabae, the "Holy Land of Eyeglasses," features the "MEGANE MUSEUM" and numerous eyewear-themed monuments throughout the city.

A Crafting History of Over 100 Years

Production began over 100 years ago. Gozaemon Masunaga (the pioneer of Japanese eyewear manufacturing) was born in Ikuno, Fukui. To improve local livelihoods in this rural area facing heavy snow in winter, he started manufacturing frames. In 1905, he invited craftsmen from Osaka to teach the skills, which spread as a side job for farmers. Subsequently, production expanded across the region, making it Japan's top producer by the early 20th century.

Eyewear Technology of Fukui and Sabae

Fukui and Sabae eyeglasses are completed through more than 200 processes. Each step is handled by specialized factories and craftsmen through a division of labor (Bun-gyo). High quality is ensured through strict control. Manufacturers and craftsmen share a mission: "To provide the ultimate comfort for something worn every day."

Workshops offer experiences like making frames or eyeglass-shaped straps. The path from Sabae Station to the museum is called "Megane Street," featuring various eyewear-themed monuments for an enjoyable city walk.
