Heike Plain

The legend of the Heike fugitives is passed down

"Heike-daira" is located in the Subara district of the upper Manna River basin (about 40 km from the city center). It is said to be where samurai fleeing defeat in the Battle of Kurikara Pass (or the Battle of Dan-no-ura) during the Genpei War took refuge. The lyrics of the "Heike Dance" (a Fukui Prefecture Designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property) performed in Subara express the human emotions and daily sentiments characteristic of these defeated warriors.

Heike-daira was owned by residents of the former Nishitani Village in Ono City, but the village was abandoned in 1970 (Showa 45) due to projects like the construction of the Managawa Dam. In 1996 (Heisei 8), Ono City purchased the land with the aim of preserving the natural environment and utilizing it as a place of relaxation for citizens. The forest, where approximately 10,000 beech trees thrive across about 40 hectares, also features giant horse chestnut trees over 400 years old and clusters of skunk cabbage.
