Half-Summer Mackerel (Hangesho Saba)
Summer doesn't start until you eat grilled mackerel!
On the eleventh day after the summer solstice, when the rainy season ends according to the calendar and the spring farming season concludes, marking the start of the peak summer season, the tradition of eating whole grilled mackerel rich in fat has long been observed in Echizen-Ono. It is said to have begun in the Edo period (1603-1868) when the feudal lord encouraged his subjects to eat it as a valuable source of stamina to heal bodies exhausted from farm work and endure the basin's uniquely muggy summer.
