Grave of Takeda Kōunsai and Others
The Mito Tengu Party sleeps
In 1864, the Mito Tengu Party, a group of imperial loyalists advocating expulsion of foreigners, raised arms to petition the Imperial Court. They were captured and executed in Tsuruga the following year. The graves of the Mito martyrs, including their leader Takeda Kōunsai, remain in Tsuruga and are designated as a National Historic Site. Nearby, Matsubara Shrine enshrines the spirits of 411 Mito martyrs. Within the shrine grounds, the herring storehouse—where many died of illness during their captivity—is preserved as a memorial hall.
