Ike-Kawauchi Wetlands

This area marks the headwaters of the Shō River flowing through the city and is designated as a prefectural natural environment conservation area. Numerous wetland plant communities are found here, notably including willow-leaved cattail and water sedge, which grow only here within the prefecture and represent the southernmost limit of their distribution in Japan. The central area around Aharai Pond boasts a rich insect fauna and provides an excellent habitat for birds as a breeding and resting ground.
