Fukui Castle Mountain Village Entrance Gate
The Yamazato-guchi Gate, also known as the "Rokabashi Gate" or "Tenshudai-shitamon," is a masugata gate guarding the western side of Fukui Castle's Honmaru.
From the early Edo period, the western area connecting to the Honmaru, known as the Nishi Ninomaru, featured a pine forest and was called the Yamazato Maru. The Yamazato-guchi Gate was constructed at the time of the castle's founding as the entrance gate from this Yamazato Maru to the Honmaru. It was destroyed along with the keep in the great fire of Kanbun 9 (1669) but was subsequently rebuilt.
We have restored the Yagura Gate, a gate with a yagura (a long, low building) on its second floor; the Munamon Gate, a structure where the roof is supported by two pillars and a crossbeam (kabuki) connecting their tops; and the earthen wall on top of the stone wall that forms the masugata (square fortification) together with these two gates.
