Wakasa Ohi Super Fireworks Festival

Saturday, September 6, 2025

The "Super Fire Festival," a giant torch in the shape of a tree leaf, 20 meters high and weighing 1 ton, will dance boldly and wildly on the sea. This is a powerful fire festival that scorches the night sky in midsummer.

The "Daihisei," a grand fire festival that still remains in various parts of Ooi Town, is said to have a tradition of over 300 years and is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset.

Originally, it was dedicated over two nights to pray for fire protection and a bountiful harvest. The fire festival is made by assembling a 14-meter-long cypress pole with five tiers of horizontal wood in the shape of leaves, and tying bundles of reeds and silver grass to the top of the pole and the five tiers of horizontal wood.

The pole is then lit and placed on the top of the mountain, and the fire pole is rotated and knocked down, then raised and rotated again. This is repeated several times, and the flames dance wildly in this heroic and dynamic fire festival.

Admission is free, but some seats are reserved for paying spectators.

There is no parking at the festival site. If coming by car, please purchase a parking ticket in advance.

Please check the official Super Fire Festival website for more information on paid spectator tickets, parking tickets, etc.
