Mount Monju
Mount Monju is a sacred mountain founded by the great monk Taichō in the first year of the Yōrō era (717), approximately 1,300 years ago. It consists of three peaks: Great Monju, Small Monju, and Okunoin, and is a central and important mountain within the Echizuyama Five Mountains (Mount Hakusan, Mount Hinoyama, Mount Echizuyama, Mount Yoshino-gatake, and Mount Monju).
The main hall on Great Monju (365m) enshrines a statue of Manjusri Bodhisattva, personally carved by the Great Master, and is revered as a Buddha who bestows wisdom.
Accessible year-round, the mountain offers healing natural beauty: spring brings clusters of dogtooth violets and camellias, late-blooming cherry blossoms; summer, lush greenery; autumn, vibrant foliage. Rare wildlife, including Japanese serows, inhabits the area. Recently, the first confirmed natural habitat of the broad-leaved amana (a nationally endangered species) was discovered on the Sea of Japan side.
