Ryusougataki Falls
Ryusougataki Falls is located in the mountains of Ikeda, with water falling 60 meters down a rocky cliff. On sunny days, the spray of the water often creates a rainbow in the early afternoon. It is the only waterfall in Fukui to have been selected as one of Japan’s 100 finest waterfalls by a specialist organization.
Legend has it that a monk named Ryusou lived here in the past, carved statues of gods and Buddha, and made a wish to ascend to heaven.
Visitors can get close to the base of the waterfall, to experience its scale firsthand. It is surrounded by greenery in spring and summer, and red leaves in autumn. In addition to the view from the bottom, there is a stairway up to an observation platform, to see the waterfall from higher up.
Ryusougataki Falls is most easily accessible by car, and parking is available nearby. There is a parking lot about 200m before (downstream) the waterfall.
Access to the waterfall closes from late November through early April. (It may shift slightly depending on the weather.) For the latest road information, please click here.
