Obama Hoze Festival
The “Obama Hoze Festival” is the annual grand festival of Hachiman Shrine in Obama City, boasting a tradition of over 300 years, and has been designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the prefecture.
Over the course of two days, processions featuring mikoshi (portable shrines), large drums, kagura (Shinto dance), lion dances, and festival floats parade through the former Hama-machi town of Obama, showcasing traditional performances and festive music.
These performances are organized by the 24 districts that once comprised the merchant residential area around Obama Castle during the Edo period, with 12 districts participating each year on an alternating basis.
Some of these performances have a history dating back more than 300 years, to the time of the Edo-period Gion Festival.
It is a festival unique even on a national scale, featuring four different types of performances within a single event.
Please come see the grand and spectacular Hoze Festival, the largest autumn festival in the Wakasa region, which attracts many tourists from outside the prefecture.
