Reisenji Temple

A temple where the wellspring of child-rearing connects hearts across five centuries

Walking along the approach lined with tall, straight cedar trees, a tall, slender building comes into view on the left. Inside stands a large, black-lacquered wooden Buddha statue, approximately 8 meters tall.

It is one of the Three Great Buddhas of Takefu and is unique as the only standing statue.

Next to it stands a shrine dedicated to Inari. Reisenji Temple belongs to the Soto Zen sect, and it is said that Inari is the guardian deity of its founder, Zen Master Dogen.

The principal image is the Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva. It is said to have been founded by Shiba Yoshitoshi, who came to Echizen (present-day northern Fukui Prefecture) during the Onin War of 1467-1477. At the upper part of the cemetery, horizontal-hole type ancient tombs are lined up.
