Ōshio Hachiman Shrine
In 887, Chūnagon Nariyuki, exiled to Echizen, prayed here continuously to clear his name of false charges. Soon after, he was pardoned and returned to the capital. Grateful, he built the shrine hall, which is said to be the origin of this site. Such a large worship hall is rare. Restoration in 1981 restored it to its original hip-and-gable roof structure with shingled roofing and open sides on all four sides. It is designated a National Important Cultural Property. Beyond the main hall, the grounds feature numerous small shrines, making exploration enjoyable. Among them, the shrine dedicated to the smallpox deity is particularly famous. The site also houses many cultural assets, including a bell cast during the Nanbokucho period.
Legend has it that during the Genpei War, Minamoto no Yoshichika established his headquarters within the shrine grounds and prayed for certain victory.
