Echizen Ono Castle was built by Kanamori Nagachika, a member of Oda Nobunaga’s elite retinue, the “Akahoroshū.” Construction took four years, beginning in 1576. Upon completion, the castle featured a large main keep with three stories across two tiers, a small keep with two stories across two tiers, as well as the Second and Third Enclosures, all protected by outer and inner moats. The stone walls were constructed using the "nozumi-zumi" technique and are designated as a prefectural cultural property. The current castle was reconstructed in 1968, and the grounds feature exhibits of artifacts from successive lords.

Depending on weather conditions, from late autumn through spring, the entire Ono Basin is often shrouded in a sea of clouds, creating a fantastical scene where only Echizen Ono Castle appears to float above it. This has earned it the nickname “Echizen Ono Castle: The Castle in the Sky,” and since its selection as one of  “Japan’s 200 Famous Castles,” it has become a popular destination attracting large crowds.
