Sakae no Yashiro Shrine

A Large Shrine in the Heart of the City

Sakaenoyashiro Shrine is a major shrine located next to the ruins of Fukui Castle. A stone torii gate welcomes visitors to its peaceful grounds. The shrine holds over a dozen events and rituals throughout the year, including a large festival at the beginning of May.

Located in the center of Fukui City, the shrine dates back to 1628 when Tokugawa Ieyasu was enshrined as a Shinto shrine within Fukui Castle. In 1873, the shrine was named "Sakae-no-Yashiro" in honor of the great deeds of Hideyasu Matsudaira, the founder of the Fukui domain, and to express his wish that Fukui would prosper. The shrine was later destroyed by fire due to war damage and the Fukui earthquake, but the Mitsui Family Ancestral Shrine in Shimogamo, Kyoto was taken over and moved here in 1949.
