Fukui Station Dinosaur Plaza
Fukui Station serves as a common arrival point to the prefecture via the Hokuriku Shinkansen. Outside the west gate of the station is Dinosaur Plaza, celebrating the many dinosaurs found in this prefecture. The plaza features three life-size dinosaurs—Fukuiraptor, Fukuisaurus, and Fukuititan—that stand as much as six meters tall, and these dinosaurs move every 30 minutes throughout the day from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. In front of these dinosaurs, there are replicas of three dinosaur footprint fossils discovered in Fukui. Many dinosaur goods are sold at nearby commercial facilities.
The outside wall of the station is decorated with artwork of dinosaurs. Some of these pictures are designed to create the illusion of dinosaurs breaking through the wall, for memorable photos.
Just outside is the Fukui City Tourist Information Center, which offers helpful pamphlets and bike rentals. Both the Echizen Railway and Fukutetsu lines are a short walk away, and many buses run to and from the station. The city’s nightlife districts are within walking distance of the station, as well.
