Tansu-cho Street
A street where cabinetmakers' workshops gathered from the late Edo period to the early Meiji era
Craftsmen skilled in woodworking have lived here since the late Edo period, and around the mid-Meiji era, skilled chest-making artisans formed the core of the community, establishing Chest-Making Town.
Today, over a dozen shops line the streets, including Japanese and Western furniture stores and joinery shops.
Some buildings retain the distinctive features of old chest-making shops. Why not take a stroll and explore each one?
