The Senko House (Tsubokawa Family Residence)

The oldest private residence in the prefecture, built in the early Edo period

Built in the early Edo period, this is the oldest thatched-roof dwelling in Fukui Prefecture. Its front features an irimoya-style roof, while the rear has a hip-and-gable thatched roof. The exterior walls, clad in cedar bark, and the white shoji screens create a pure, elegant beauty. The main pillars are made of chestnut wood finished with chōna and yariganna techniques. Forked "bifurcated pillars" support the beams of the main house and the annex. With a length of 14.5 meters and a width of 10.3 meters, it was a grand structure for its time. This valuable building offers insight into the lifestyle of medieval regional lords (Designated as a National Important Cultural Property). The Tsubokawa family is said to be descendants of Tsubokawa Tajima Sadazumi, who is believed to be a descendant of Minamoto no Yoriyoshi, a warrior of the Northern Guard who protected the Imperial Court in the late Heian period.
