Lake Kitagata
Lake Kitagata is a large lake near the northern coast of Fukui. The lake is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as fishing, and pedal-powered boats and bicycles are available for rental. It also serves as a place to relax and enjoy the iris flowers in June, and the beautiful surrounding landscape.
Every August, the lake is used as the venue for a national canoe polo tournament. Then, at the beginning of September, an evening event is held with lanterns arranged near the lake, ending with a fireworks show over the water.
Located along Route 305 at the northern tip of Fukui Prefecture, this brackish lake has been selected as one of the 500 most important wetlands by the Ministry of the Environment. Visitors can enjoy fishing for carp, crucian carp, eels, and other fish, and bird watching. A bright red bridge called Iris Bridge spans the lake, and there are walking trails and a bicycle park in the vicinity. Canoe polo tournaments are held in August, attracting canoeists from all over the country.
