Site of Yuri Kōsei's Residence

Sakamoto Ryoma also visited

This is the place where Yuri Kōsei (Mitsuo Hachirō) lived, who rebuilt the finances of the Fukui domain and drafted the original version of the "Five Charter Oaths," titled "Outline of the Principles of Government," for the new government. It is said that Sakamoto Ryoma, brought here by Yokoi Shōnan, held a meeting with Yuri here. A monument stands here inscribed with the poem attributed to Ryoma recited at that time: "For your sake, I would not regret giving my life, but my heart is troubled by the future of the country" (using stone brought from near Ryoma's birthplace). The area around the former residence was where lower-ranking samurai, known as "Keya Samurai," lived. Yuri Kōsei rose to prominence from this place as an important retainer of the Fukui Domain.

(※The actual site of the residence was located near the present-day riverbed and was lost during river construction work between 1900 and 1911.)
