Sanae Park · Statue of Hashimoto Sanae

The genius of the Bakumatsu era, Hashimoto Sainai, rests here.

Hashimoto Sainai was a samurai of the Fukui domain during the late Edo period, a man who demonstrated exceptional talent at a young age. Born the eldest son of a domain physician, he entered the Tekijuku school founded by Ogata Koan in Osaka to study Dutch learning.

After serving as a teacher at the domain school Meidōkan and undertaking reforms there, he went to Edo to become an advisor to Matsudaira Shungaku, working tirelessly on national affairs. However, he was beheaded at the young age of 26 during the Ansei Purge.

Sainai Park in Sainai-cho, Fukui City, contains the graves of Hashimoto Sainai and his parents. It also features a statue of Hashimoto Sainai, erected through citizen donations, and a monument inscribed with his "Keihatsu-roku" (Record of Enlightenment), written when he was 15 years old.
