Katsuyama Sagicho Bayashi Preservation Society - Hospitality Special Feature -

Katsuyama Sagicho Bayashi Preservation Society Junichiro Masuya

Main Activities

We perform Katsuyama Sagicho Bayashi, a local performing art of Katsuyama City, at events both within and outside the prefecture. At the annual "Katsuyama Sagicho Festival" in February, adults and children dressed in red long robes dance exuberantly atop twelve yagura (tower-like structures), performing unique, playful gestures to the lively rhythms of flutes, shamisen, and gongs.

Number of Members: Approximately 40

Activity Locations: Various locations within and outside the prefecture

Activity period: Year-round

・This is a rare drum where people sit on it to muffle the sound. The "floating drum" style, where they play freely and joyfully, is truly unique!

・The sight of people dancing exuberantly in red costumes is Instagram-worthy and popular with photographers!

・Members range from elementary school students to seniors, spanning a wide age range!

・We hold practice sessions every Thursday evening. Anyone is welcome to observe.

What do you focus on during activities?

Since it's bright and cheerful music, we perform with the intention of conveying that joy to the audience.

What inspired you to start this activity?

I performed Katsuyama Sagicho Bayashi as a child. After returning to Fukui, seeing the "Katsuyama Sagicho Festival" again made me realize how amazing it is. I thought I should study it more, so I joined the preservation society and became completely hooked.

What gives you a sense of fulfillment?

It's incredibly rewarding when first-time audience members are deeply moved. When we perform in Tokyo or Osaka, they often say, "I'll definitely come see you at the Sagicho Festival!"

What are your thoughts about the upcoming Shinkansen opening?

I hope we get more places where we can perform Katsuyama Sagicho Bayashi anytime. I'd love for people to reach out to us for various opportunities.

A message for tourists visiting Fukui Prefecture!

Please come see the Katsuyama Sagicho Festival and experience the fun festival music that will completely change your image of Hokuriku Fukui! February in Katsuyama is cold, so be sure to bundle up warmly!
