Shōonji Temple
In 1476 (the 8th year of the Bunmei era), after the Yoshizaki Temple burned down, Lord Asakura Toshikage invited Renjitsu, a close relative of the Venerable Rennyo, to serve as abbot. The temple he established in Shinmachi, the castle town of Ichijo, became the origin of Shōonji Temple.
After the fall of the Asakura clan, the temple was relocated to Togo at the command of Lord Hasegawa Shuichi, lord of Togo Castle.
Today, the "Techno Memorial Service," initiated in 2016 (Heisei 28), has garnered attention both domestically and internationally.
The Techno Hōyō is an initiative aiming to reinterpret traditional Buddhist chanting (Shomyo) with modern sound arrangements, using lighting and projection mapping to express the world of Buddha's light. At Shōonji, it is performed primarily during celebratory and gratitude-focused services like the "Flower Festival" (Hanamatsuri) and "Hōnko" memorial services.
Both traditional Buddhist chanting and the temple's splendid decorations evolved as our ancestors incorporated cutting-edge technology of their time to envision the Pure Land of Bliss.
While cherishing this tradition, the desire to express the beautiful world of Buddha using modern technology and without clinging to fixed notions feels like something we share with our ancestors across the ages.
Furthermore, starting in 2024 (Reiwa 6), the main hall, adorned with projection mapping under the title "Gokuraku Ambient," is open as an art space where visitors can experience the extraordinary, with quiet ambient music drifting through the space.
