Discover the Depths of Washi Paper: Hands-On Experience with Washi Paper Making at Yanase Ryōzō Paper Mill
Highlights

Yanase Ryōzō Paper Workshop specializes in producing traditional Japanese paper, primarily creating wrapping paper and packaging paper used by Japanese confectionery shops. They craft paper using the delicate technique of mold-made paper with water-dropped patterns, as well as colorful and charmingly designed washi.
At this workshop, female artisans, including Kyoko Yanase—a third-generation master and traditional craftsman—play an active role. During the experience, Kyoko and her husband Yasuhiro will guide you through everything from explaining washi paper to teaching paper-making techniques and creating tapestries.
Experience Details
Upon arriving at Yanase Ryōzō Paper Workshop, begin with a studio tour. In the normally off-limits paper-making studio, learn the basics of washi: its materials, production process, and the characteristics of Echizen washi.

Afterwards, you'll borrow an apron and boots and actually try making washi paper yourself. During the experience, you'll get to try multiple techniques, such as "sukikomi" (scooping in) and "rakusui" (dropping water).

While your handmade paper dries, be sure to visit the adjacent "RYOZO" shop. In addition to our own products, RYOZO carries a wide selection of washi items from other workshops in Imadate. Why not pick up some washi accessories as souvenirs?
To conclude the experience, you'll frame the washi paper you made or purchased in a wooden frame to create a tapestry. The texture of washi paper complements not only traditional Japanese rooms but any space, including Western-style rooms. We encourage you to display it in your home.
