Okamoto Shrine, Otaki Shrine
Okamoto-Otaki Shrine is Japan’s only shrine dedicated to the goddess of paper. Nowadays, it is known for its history, beautiful grounds, and its unusual architecture: a single large, complex roof connects and combines Okamoto and Otaki Shrines into one.
About 1,500 years ago, when Emperor Keitai was in Echizen, a beautiful princess appeared upstream from the Okamoto River in this village and taught the villagers the art of paper making.
The people who received her teaching praised her as "Kawakami-gozen" and built the shrine to worship her.
The shrine main building was built in 1843 and is said to have the most elaborate roof in Japan.
