Okamoto Shrine, Otaki Shrine
This shrine is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is dedicated to the “Goddess of Paper,” a deity rarely found in Japan.
About 1,500 years ago, when Emperor Keitai was in Echizen and was known as Prince Otori, a beautiful princess is said to have appeared upstream on the Okamoto River in this village. She told the villagers, “Since this land is blessed with pure water, use this water to make paper and make a living,” and taught them the art of papermaking.
The people who received this teaching revered the princess as “Kawakami Gozen” and built Okamoto Shrine to enshrine her.
The shrine hall was constructed in 1843 (Tenpō 14) and is said to have “the most complex roof in Japan.”
