Site of Kanegasaki Castle
The ruins of Kanegasaki Castle are located on a small mountain overlooking Tsuruga Bay. Although there are many anecdotes from various periods, it is said that the castle was first built by Taira no Michimori in the late Heian period (794-1185) during the Jisho and Juei wars (Genpei wars) to oppose Kiso Yoshinaka, who held sway in the Hokuriku region. In the Nanbokucho Period (1336), the castle is known as the site where Nitta Yoshisada fought against the Ashikaga forces, protecting Tsunenaga and Sonora, and in the Warring States Period (1467-1568), it was the site of the "retreat of Kanegasaki" where Oda Nobunaga was betrayed by Asai Nagamasa during his attack on Echizen Asakura and forced to make a desperate retreat. The area is also known as the site of the "retreat of Kanegasaki".
Today, Kanegasaki-gu Shrine stands at the foot of the ruins of Kanegasaki Castle.
