Kanegasaki-gu Shrine

Take Part in a Festival, with a Prayer for Romance

This is the old battlefield where Nitta Yoshisada, the protector of Prince Tsunenaga and Prince Takera, fought against the Ashikaga forces in 1336. The battle was so severe that Prince Tonoara and 300 others set fire to the castle and committed suicide six months after the siege. Both kings are enshrined at Kanegasaki-gu Shrine in the middle of the castle. During the Warring States period (of Japanese history, approx. 1467-1568), the castle was the site of battles between Asakura and Asai forces and Nobunaga, Hideyoshi, and Ieyasu. The small mountain with a beautiful view is also known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.

In early April, Kanegasakigu Shrine holds its annual Flower-Exchanging Festival. Visitors can purchase cherry blossom branches to exchange with one another, as a prayer to find true love. The shrine’s 400 or so cherry blossom trees come into bloom in April, as well.
