Tsuruga Aka Renga (Diorama and Restaurants)

Historic Brick Buildings with a Giant Diorama and Fine Dining Inside

The Tsuruga Aka Renga red brick warehouse is a facility consisting of two historic brick buildings. One of the buildings serves as a museum showing the history of Tsuruga, with a 27-meter-long diorama that depicts the city as it was in the 1940s. The other building features a café and restaurants—one of which has been listed in the Michelin Guide.

These warehouses were originally built in 1905 for use at Tsuruga Port, and in 2015, they were renovated into a tourism facility. The buildings were originally used for petroleum storage. Over the years, they were used as warehouses for various other purposes, including military supplies and kombu kelp.

Tsuruga Port, a good natural harbor, has long flourished as the main gateway to Japan. Old warehouses line the quayside, where the scent of the sea wafts through the air, creating a unique atmosphere of a port town. On the east side of the main port along the Tsuruga Port Route, there is a brick warehouse designed by a foreign engineer and built in the Meiji period (1868-1912), which was used as an oil and kelp storage facility. Across the prefectural road, on the west side, there is a row of reinforced one-story warehouses and other buildings that tell the story of the prosperity of Tsuruga Port today.
