Iwaya Kannon
A giant cedar tree over 500 years old
Iwaya Kannon is said to have originated when three statues—the Nyoirin Kannon, the Eleven-Headed Kannon, and the Sacred Kannon—were enshrined in the shadow of a massive rock within the temple grounds. Formerly known as Reigenji Temple, it is also said to have been a sacred site along the pilgrimage route to Mount Hakusan from Toyoharaji Temple, a center of Hakusan worship in Sakai City.
The great cedar tree growing within the grounds of Iwaya Kannon is over 500 years old, with a trunk circumference of 17 meters. It is the thickest cedar in the prefecture and is designated as a municipal cultural property.
