Ishaku-ji Temple
Soto Zen sect. The principal image is a standing statue of the Eleven-Faced Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva. This temple originally stood on the site of Chōei-ji Temple (in Tara-shō, Obama City), but it is said to have been relocated to its present location on the site of the former Mangon-ji Temple in the early Edo period. The principal image, a wooden standing statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon, dates from the Heian period and stands 109 cm tall. It depicts a Thousand-Armed Kannon with 42 arms: a Buddha face atop the crown, and ten Bodhisattva faces on the crown base. The statue's body houses the Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Dharani Sutra, and both the statue and the sutra are designated Important Cultural Properties.
