Saifukuji Temple

A Temple with a Garden Said to Represent Paradise Itself

The Jodo Buddhist temple Saifukuji was built in 1368. The temple is best known for its huge garden, more than 4,600 square meters in size. The garden is said to represent the Buddhist land of perfect bliss, with rich greenery in spring and summer, and red leaves in autumn.

It is the former central head temple of the Chinzei sect of the Jodo Sect, founded by Ryoyo Shonin about 650 years ago. Located at the foot of Mt. Ohara, west of the city center, the main buildings, including the Mikado, Amida Hall, and Shoin, are designated as national important cultural properties, and the Shoin Garden is designated as a national place of scenic beauty. The Shoin Garden in particular is said to represent the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, and the autumn leaves are especially beautiful. The temple also owns many cultural assets such as calligraphy, paintings, and artifacts.
