Site of Hashimoto Sainai's Residence

The Birthplace of Genius Hashimoto Sainai, Who Charged Through the Bakumatsu Era

Hashimoto Sainai, a samurai of the Fukui domain during the Bakumatsu period, was promoted by Matsudaira Shungaku, the 16th lord of the Fukui domain, and played an active role. However, he met an untimely death at the young age of 26 due to the Ansei Purge.

Sanai was born in this place in 1834 (the 5th year of Tenpō). The "Keihaku-roku," famous for its five precepts—"Dispel childish thoughts," "Strengthen your resolve," "Establish your purpose," "Strive to learn," and "Choose your friends wisely"—was written "Diligently pursue learning," and "Choose friends wisely." These five precepts, famously known as the "Keihatsu-roku," were written by Sainai at age 15 as his personal life guidelines here. The five precepts inscribed on the "Imperial Keihatsu-roku Monument" erected in 1955 (Showa 30) are a careful reproduction from the original manuscript of the "Keihatsu-roku" by Hashimoto Sainai, preserved by the Imperial Household Agency.

Preserved on the site are the well where his birth bath water was drawn and the marker stone for "Tokiwanoi" (Evergreen Well), erected in 1924 (Taisho 13) to commemorate the visit of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince (later Emperor Showa).
