Echizen Great Buddha

The model for the principal Buddha statue at Daishizan Seidai-ji Temple in Katsuyama City is a seated statue located in the Longmen Grottoes on the outskirts of Luoyang, Henan Province, China—the birthplace of Buddhism—which stands 17 meters tall.

This size surpasses that of the Great Buddha of Nara (documented height: 16.2 meters; actual measurement: 14.98 meters).

Furthermore, the halo is 23 meters tall, and since a 3-meter lotus pedestal is placed atop a 2-meter stone base, the total height reaches 28 meters.

While the Nara Great Buddha has a stocky build, the Echizen Great Buddha is characterized by its slender, gentle face and neck.

It is made of bronze, with a total weight of 200 tons of copper. In addition, a total of 1,281 stone and gold Buddha statues are enshrined on the walls to the left, right, and rear of the Great Buddha, and two Arhat statues (10.3 meters) and two Bodhisattva statues (11.2 meters) are enshrined on either side of the Great Buddha as attendant deities.
