Site of the Residence of the Imperial Consorts

The shirabyōshi favored by Taira no Kiyomori

Next to Nishifujishima Elementary School lies the site said to be where Gion and his sister Gion-nyo once lived.

Giō and Gime were shirabyōshi (female entertainers who sang and danced in male attire), appearing in The Tale of the Heike. They enjoyed the favor of Taira no Kiyomori, but his heart shifted to another shirabyōshi, Hotoke Gozen. Giō was banished from the residence. The poem she wrote on a sliding door panel at that time—"Whether sprouting or withering, we are both grasses of the wild field. Which of us shall meet the autumn?"—is engraved on a stone pillar.

The nearby children's park is also named after this site: "Gio Park."
