Tangando

The hermitage visited by Matsudaira Shuntake, Yokoi Shonan, Hashimoto Sanai, and Nakane Sessue.

Away from the hustle and bustle, the hermitage and garden retain the atmosphere of the end of the Edo period (1603-1868).

This hermitage was built as a villa by Zuian Yamamoto, a doctor of the Fukui domain, in 1846 in the late Edo period. The feudal lord Matsudaira Harutake, Yokoi Shonan, Hashimoto Sanai, Nakane Sessue, and others visited the villa to discuss matters in secret.

Today, the restaurant is used as a ryotei (Japanese-style restaurant), where visitors can enjoy a meal while experiencing the history of the area.

The ruins of a stone quarry still remain on the site, and the paving stones and bridges are richly decorated with sceptered stones.
