Yuo Pass
Long a key transportation hub, it frequently became a battlefield during the Genpei War, the wars of the Nanboku-chō period, and the Ikko uprisings.
The Yuo Pass area has long been a key transportation hub and was frequently the site of battles, including the Genpei War, conflicts during the Nanboku-chō period, and the Ikko Ikki uprising. It is said that in 1578, when Shibata Katsuie improved the Hokuriku Highway, renovations were made, resulting in the current pass road. However, an older pass road (Yoshinao's Path), said to have been cut by Kiso Yoshinao when he marched on Kyoto, also remains. At the pass stands Magorokko Shrine, dedicated to the smallpox deity. During the Edo period, the four teahouses along the pass distributed protective amulets to ward off misfortune.
