Mikuni Minato Retro

Mikuni Minato Town flourished as a bustling port during Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868) and Meiji period (1868–1912), thanks to the Kitamae-bune coastal trade routes. Today, the town retains a charming retro atmosphere, with rows of traditional townhouses featuring wooden lattice doors—remnants of its once-prosperous merchant community.

To better appreciate Mikuni Minato’s history and unique character, visitors can join a guided walking tour led by local volunteers from “Kitamae Mikuni.”

The Mikuni Minato Machiya-kan, located along Kitamae Street, also serves as a convenient rest stop for visitors. Bicycle rentals are available, making it easy to explore the nostalgic streetscape and discover traces of the town’s former prosperity at your own pace.
