Tokimizu
100 Sounds of Japan Worth Preserving
Tokimizu, a prefecturally designated scenic spot, is a nationally rare intermittent cold spring located midway up Mt. Ohira. Water gushes forth at intervals of several hours. Long ago, mountain workers used the sound of this water as a timekeeper, saying, "When you hear this water sound three times, it's noon," which is how it got its name. The water temperature remains around 11 degrees Celsius year-round. The water is so clean that Hakone salamanders live here.
