Wakasahime Shrine (Wakasa Ichinomiya Shrine)
Wakasa Ichinomiya Shrine was established as the main Shinto shrine of Wakasa Province. Wakasa Ichinomiya actually consists of a pair of shrines: Wakasahiko Shrine as the “upper shrine,” and Wakasahime Shrine as the “lower shrine.”
Wakasa Hiko-jinja Shrine was founded in 714, and moved to its present location in 715. The path to Wakasahiko Shrine is lined with tall, ancient trees. The shrine is dedicated to the deity of tatami mats, and is also a protector shrine for sailors and fishers.
According to shrine records, Wakasahime Shrine was founded in 721, in the early Nara Period. Wakasahime Shrine is a popular place to pray for safe childbirth.
The Wakasahime Shrine is dedicated to Toyotamahime no Mikoto (Princess Otohime).
Both shrines are believed to be guardian deities of safety at sea and good fishing.
The common feature of both shrines is that they have three buildings, the main shrine, the Shinto gate, and the Zuishimon gate, located in a straight line within the shrine precincts.
