Wakashihiko Shrine (Wakasa Ichinomiya)
Wakashahiko Shrine is divided into two shrines: Wakashahiko Shrine (Upper Shrine) and Wakashahime Shrine (Lower Shrine). This shrine is the Upper Shrine, established in the first year of the Reikyu era (715 AD) during the Nara period. It enshrines Prince Hikohohodemi, famed in the myth of the Sea God and Mountain God, as the Wakashahiko deity.
The Lower Shrine is located 1.5 km north of here in the village of Onyū. Established six years after this shrine, in the fifth year of the Yōrō era (721 AD), it venerates Toyotama-hime-no-mikoto as the Wakasa-hime deity.
Both shrines are collectively referred to as Jōge-gū or Wakasa Ichinomiya. Recorded as a Myōjin Taisha (Major Deity Shrine) in the Engishiki (Engi Code) of the Heian period, it is the foremost ancient shrine of the highest rank in the province of Wakasa.
