Gotanjoji Temple

A Charming Temple Beloved by Cat Fans

Located in the quiet mountains of Shoden-cho, Echizen City, Gotanjoji Temple ーof the Soto Zen Buddhist sectー is a temple specializing in ascetic practices where monks devote themselves to daily training.

Commonly called "Neko-dera," or cat temple, Gotanjoji takes in cats that have nowhere else to go, and about 30 cats currently live there.

Many cat lovers visit the temple because of its beckoning cat omikujiji fortune slips, cat-themed goshuincho red seal book, and goshuin red seals full of cats.

Don't miss the rare Neko Daibutsu (Great Buddha with cats playing with each other).

We recommend visiting around 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. when the cats are ready to eat.

(In summer, we recommend a visit around 7:30 a.m. when it is cooler.)

Sunday Zen meditation class is held every Sunday from 1:30 p.m. Free of charge.
