Horossa Fossil Excavation Center

No reservation needed! Come empty-handed for a fossil excavation experience!

At the Horossa Fossil Excavation Center, you can experience excavating dinosaur teeth, ammonites, plants, and shell fossils.

The facility lets you experience Earth's history spanning approximately 300 million years, from the Paleozoic Era about 440 million years ago to the Early Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era about 130 million years ago. It has a large capacity, accommodating up to 200 people at once. Plus, it's covered, so it's open even when it rains. The facility provides tools like hammers and goggles, so you can easily experience fossil excavation without bringing anything. Staff will kindly guide you, making it safe and enjoyable even for first-time children.

Right next to the Horossa Fossil Excavation Center is the Ga-Ono Kuzuryu Fossil Lab.

It's packed with fossils attracting global attention, like the world's oldest-known Tyrannosauridae tooth discovered in the Izumi area and neighboring municipalities, Japan's oldest bird footprints, and the world's only discovered lizard! It also displays ammonite and crinoid fossils showing this area was once underwater, along with plant specimens and representative minerals from across Japan. This facility traces the history of the Earth and this region from ancient times to the present.
