Honkatsuji Temple

A temple of the Nichiren Shu sect. Originally founded in 810 as a Shingon sect temple, it was converted to Nichiren Shu by Saint Nichiryu in 1426.

Members of the Mito Tengu Party who had surrendered to the Kaga Domain forces participating in the suppression campaign were housed at Honkōji, Honmyōji, and Chōenji temples in Tsuruga. This temple received 387 individuals, including Takeda Kōunsai and Fujita Shōjirō. The Kaga Domain treated the Mito Tengu Party generously, even distributing New Year's kagami mochi rice cakes. However, after being handed over to the shogunate, they were crammed into sixteen storage warehouses used for preserving herring bran fertilizer and subjected to harsh treatment.

Today, a stone monument inscribed "Site of the Mito Martyrs' Confinement" stands at Honji Temple.
