Seimei Shrine

A shrine dedicated to Abe no Seimei, a Heian-period (794-1185) "onmyoji", those technical officers in charge of divination and geomorphology based on the theory of the yin-and-yang five phases. Revered as a guardian against fire for protecting the town from numerous fires, the shrine attracts many worshippers. The main hall enshrines the 'Prayer Stone,' said to have been used by Seimei in his studies of onmyodo, a technique that uses knowledge of astronomy and calendars to divine good fortune in terms of date, time, direction and general personal affairs, originating from the philosophy of the yin-yang and the five elements.
