Echizen City Tourism Association Tourism Volunteer Guide Division

Echizen City has a long history, serving as the seat of the provincial government of Echizen Province during the Nara period (710-794 CE) and flourishing as a center of politics, culture, and economy.

The cityscape exudes charm, featuring traditional buildings like the "Kura no Tsuji" (Warehouse Crossroads), cobblestone paths, and old-style townhouses.

The outskirts are dotted with rich rural landscapes, and in the satoyama where storks migrate, efforts are made to breed and raise them.

Traditional crafts designated as National Important Traditional Crafts, such as "Echizen Washi" paper, "Echizen Uchihamono" blades, and "Echizen Tansu" chests, have been passed down in this blessed environment.

Additionally, besides the "Takefu Chrysanthemum Doll Festival," which has continued for over half a century, the area is also associated with the Manyoshu anthology.

It is also the only place Murasaki Shikibu, author of the Tale of Genji, lived outside the capital during her lifetime. Murasaki Shikibu Park, featuring a shinden-zukuri garden, and the Murasaki Yukari Museum of Echizen display materials related to her.

We invite you to explore this town rich in history, traditional crafts, and culture.
