Echizen City Tourism Association Tourism Volunteer Guide Division
Echizen City has a long history, serving as the seat of government for Echizen Province during the Nara period and flourishing as a center of politics, culture, and economy.
The city center features charming streetscapes, including "Kuranotsuji" with its preserved traditional buildings, cobblestone paths, and old-style townhouses.
The outskirts are dotted with rich rural landscapes, and in the satoyama where storks migrate, efforts are made to raise and breed them.
Traditional crafts designated as National Treasures, such as "Echizen Washi" paper, "Echizen Uchihamono" blades, and "Echizen Tansu" chests, have been passed down within this blessed environment.
In addition to the "Takefu Chrysanthemum Dolls," a tradition spanning over half a century, the area is also associated with the "Manyoshu" anthology of Japanese poetry.
It is also the only place Murasaki Shikibu lived outside the capital during her lifetime. Murasaki Shikibu Park, featuring a shinden-zukuri garden, and the Murasaki Memorial Hall display materials related to her.
We invite you to explore this town rich in history, traditional crafts, and culture.
