Kokubunji Temple (Echizen City)

Kokubunji, which likely had deep ties to the Echizen Provincial Government

By imperial decree issued by Emperor Shomu in 741, Kokubunji Temple was built in Takefu (present-day Echizen City), where the provincial capital was located. Today, it stands modestly beside the Soja Grand Shrine, but at the time of its founding, Echizen (present-day northern Fukui Prefecture) was a large province encompassing Kaga as well. It is thought that Kokubunji Temple was also a magnificent structure occupying vast grounds. The principal image is a seated statue of Tenpai Yakushi Nyorai, said to be the work of the Nara period monk Gyoki. It is a secret Buddha and cannot always be seen.

Goma fire rituals can be observed at 10:00 AM on the second Sunday of every month (except January, February, and November).
