Soja Daijingu Grand Shrine

A shrine indicating that this land was once the provincial capital

The Soja was a shrine invariably established at the location of the provincial capital. In ancient times, one of the major duties of the provincial governor was to make an annual pilgrimage to the principal shrines within the province.

The Soja shrine was established to gather the deities in one place for worship, allowing pilgrims to visit there as a substitute for touring the entire province.

Affectionately called "O-shoja-san" by locals, it draws many visitors for its festivals: the spring "Ohai-gosan," the summer "Chinowa-kuguri" (straw-ring ritual), and the autumn "Soja Festival." Its large torii gate stands tall, and the spacious grounds exude the dignified atmosphere of a provincial capital shrine.
