Sōja Grand Shrine

A shrine indicating that this land was once the provincial capital

The Sosha shrine was always established at the location of the provincial capital. In ancient times, one of the major duties of the provincial governor was to make an annual pilgrimage to the principal shrines within the province. The Sosha shrine was created to gather the deities in one place for worship, allowing pilgrims to visit there instead of making the pilgrimage throughout the entire province. Affectionately known by locals as "Osonja-san," it draws many visitors for its festivals: the spring "Ohai-go-san," the summer "Chinowa-kuguri" (passing through a sacred straw ring), and the autumn "Sōja Festival." Its large torii gate stands tall, and the spacious grounds convey the dignified atmosphere befitting a provincial capital shrine.
