Benkei-no-Sentaku Iwa
The odd rock formation resembling a washboard where Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his party are said to have stopped
Strange rock formations created by the erosion of the Sea of Japan. Enjoy the dynamic scenery of waves crashing against the rocks.
The name "Benkei's Washing Rock" comes from a legend: when Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a hero of the Minamoto clan (one of the four great clans that dominated Japanese politics during the Heian period of 794-1185), was fleeing from Minamoto no Yoritomo, he and his companion Benkei are said to have washed clothes and rested on this rock, which resembles a washboard.
With parking and restrooms available, why not stop by for a break during your drive along the Echizen Coast?
