Awara City Local History Museum
The Awara City Local History Museum is located on the second floor of "Kanazu Honjin IKOSSA," a lifelong learning complex.
For details about Kanazu Honjin IKOSSA, please click here.
The museum houses and displays artifacts excavated from sites that tell the city's history, including the Important Cultural Property "Stone Tools and Stone Products Excavated from the Kuwano Site," as well as "Honjin Decorations" displayed in the 18 districts of the former Kanazu Town during the Kanazu Festival.
Furthermore, the sorting room features a space for experiential learning, allowing for coordinated use with the Kanazu Library on the first floor and the Citizen Culture Training Center on the third floor, leveraging the strengths of the complex facility.
Located conveniently near Ashihara-Onsen Station, we hope it will serve as a hub for experiencing the post town of "Kanazu" and the "Kanazu Festival," including the adjacent Kanazu Shrine.
The "Honjin Decorations" tradition began in 1613 (Keicho 18) when the Kanazu Magistrate's Office was established in Kanazu-juku. Townspeople decorated inns like the "Honjin" (official lodging for daimyo and shogunate officials) with ornaments made from everyday items. This served both to honor the officials and to delight visitors with visual beauty.
Today, these decorations are crafted by residents of each district at the "honjin" to welcome the deities traveling through the districts aboard festival floats during the Kanazu Festival.
Therefore, while the Honjin decorations are typically dismantled immediately after the Kanazu Festival, the Awara City Local History Museum's "Honjin Decorations Gallery" displays them year-round thanks to the generosity of the participating districts.
The "Honjin Decorations Gallery" is a permanent exhibition. The unique charm of the Awara City Local History Museum is that it's the only place where you can see all the "Honjin decorations" used in the Kanazu Festival over the past several years displayed together year-round!
