Myōkōji Temple

The temple founded by the royal merchant Kuwano-ya

According to records of the Nichiren sect, the temple was founded in 1464. Its founder was Nichin, a Nichiren priest who authored the Treatise on Establishing the Correct Teaching for the Governance of the Nation. However, it was actually Kuwano-ya Hikozaemon, a wealthy merchant who served as the town's representative and handled money exchange for the Fukui domain during the Edo period, who deeply revered Nichin and established Myōkō-ji. Nichin's second son, Nichiei, became the chief priest. During the Edo period, Kuwano-ya was a wealthy merchant involved in money exchange for the Fukui domain and also served as a town representative. The spacious temple grounds themselves suggest the wealth of its patronage. The temple adjoins Ryūmon-ji, and the moat behind Ryūmon-ji remains preserved. Furthermore, a magnificent stone monument to the righteous man, Yagi Daihachi, stands before the main hall.
